Get Your Steps in: Why Everyone Should Aim for 10,000 Steps a Day

Physical health trends skyrocketed across the country during the pandemic, as gyms and other forms of recreational activities were unavailable, forcing America to get creative. One of the most popular exercise trends became 10,000 steps a day. While it may seem simple and ineffective, multiple research institutions have shown the benefits of getting your steps in daily.

Benefits of 10,000 Steps a Day

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota researchers have said that engaging in daily walks helps reduce your risks of heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, and depression. The average American walks around 3,000 - 4,000 steps a day which roughly calculates to 1.5 to 2 miles, therefore a good goal for those starting out is to double the amount of steps you are taking to reach that 10,000-step goal. 10,000 steps is about 5 miles a day which can seem daunting but breaking up your steps will likely help you reach your goal, whether that is one in the morning before work and one following the work day, or breaks throughout the day to keep yourself refreshed and energized.

Tips for Getting Steps

A few suggestions to up your number of steps per day include, taking your dog for a walk, listening to an education podcast on the treadmill, scheduling time to take a lap outside for a breather during the work day, or for those who are super committed to the process you can purchase a walking desk to multitask throughout the day. Some exercise is better than no exercise, start small, be deliberate, and use your time efficiently.
